First Overseas Exhibition from Kumamoto - Expansion of Expression and Connection in New York "Pangaea. Exhibition" 25th Anniversary Exhibition in New York

In 2016, when the Kumamoto earthquake caused extensive damage to the region, the artists of the "Pangaea. Exhibition" artists held workshops at evacuation centers, bringing healing and smiles through art to those living in shelters.

Pangaea. Exhibition" is a self-organized group exhibition that started in Kumamoto in 2001. Its predecessor was the "Ikuro Exhibition," which was held 22 times from 1978 to 2000. After a generational change, the name was changed to "Pangaea. Exhibition" and has continued its activities based in Kumamoto Prefecture.

"Pangaea ( Pangaea )" is the name of a supercontinent that is believed to have existed about 250 million years ago, meaning "all continents. Just as these continents eventually split off to form the world we know today, "Pangaea. - The name of this exhibition expresses our wish that the artists will follow their own paths and eventually spread their wings to the world.

In 2016, when the Kumamoto earthquake caused extensive damage to the region, the artists of "Pangaea. Exhibition" artists thought, "Is there anything we can do?" and held workshops at the Gofuku Community Center, which served as an evacuation center. With the cooperation of art supply stores and manufacturers, they brought healing and smiles to the evacuees through art. This experience was a major turning point for the artists, and it led them to strongly believe that they wanted to energize Kumamoto as artists, and that their expressions could give hope and strength to people's hearts.

The artists of "Pangaea. Exhibition" artists planned to hold their first overseas exhibition in New York once in 2020.
We want to bring the expression that we have been steadily working on in Kumamoto to the wider world. If we could send out information about artists who were close to us and who were engaged in friendly competition overseas, it would give hope and encouragement to others. This plan was unavoidably cancelled due to the Corona disaster, but in 2025, the 25th anniversary of the group's establishment, the members discussed it again and decided to go to New York once again. And now, the wish for connection and expansion that was contained in the name "Pangaea" has come to fruition in the form of the first overseas exhibition. The journey of expression that began in Kumamoto is now entering a new chapter in New York. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the appeal of Kumamoto's art and culture and the possibilities that lie ahead.
