With the use of the interactive AI "ChatGPT" spreading rapidly around the world, countries are beginning to consider regulatory proposals and certification systems due to concerns about protection of personal information. U.S. President Biden has reportedly urged Congress to quickly pass the Federal Data Privacy Act, a bipartisan bill that would restrict the collection of personal information by high-tech companies as an appropriate safeguard for AI. Regarding the protection of personal information, the California Privacy Rights Act ( CPRA ), which amends the California Consumer Privacy Act ( CCPA ), became effective in January of this year, and the bylaws regarding amendments made by the CPRA were finalized this spring. The bylaws regarding the CPRA amendments were finalized in the spring of this year. In this seminar, government officials in Washington, D.C., who follow developments in the field of data privacy ・ AI regulation and technology development, will explain the latest trends and related issues in Japanese. In addition, a Japanese lawyer will discuss how Japanese subsidiaries in the U.S. should prepare now for compliance with the CCPA/CPRA and the upcoming federal data privacy bill.

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology ( NICT ) Deputy Director of Washington Office

He joined Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2007. Engaged in the formulation of technical standards for cell phones and other devices, competition policy in the telecommunications business sector, and the establishment of an R&D fund for next-generation networks.
Currently, at NICT Washington Office, he is in charge of research on U.S. policy ・ market trends and other issues related to emerging technologies such as 6G, quantum and AI, and R&D cooperation between Japan and the U.S.

Multimedia Promotion Center of Japan ( FMMC ) Deputy Director of Washington Office

He joined Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2007. Involved in consumer protection in the telecommunications business sector, cyber security measures, and international expansion of the ICT industry.
Currently, he is in charge of research on U.S. information and communications policy ・ including economic security and privacy protection, and market trends at the Multimedia Promotion Center, a general incorporated foundation that conducts research and disseminates information on overseas trends in the information and communications field.

Takeshige Sugimoto ( Sugimoto ・ Takeshige ) Mr.
S&K Brussels, Principal Attorney, Future of Privacy Forum ( Washington, DC ) Senior Fellow, Director of Japan DPO Association

Graduated from Keio University in 2004 and registered as a lawyer in 2006. After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School in the U.S. and Oxford University in the U.K., he has been based mainly in Belgium since 2001. After working for several major local law firms, he has been the head of S&K Brussels law firm with offices in Tokyo, Brussels, and New York since 19. He has been involved in the European Union ( EU ) General Data Protection Regulation, California Consumer Privacy Act ( CCPA ) ・ California Privacy Rights Act ( CPRA ), US Federal Data Privacy Bill and other personal data protection legislation around the world ・ AI regulations and national authorities.
