Japan Gallery "Shichiro Kobayashi - Drama of Light and Darkness Exhibition

A retrospective exhibition will be held in memory of animation art director and painter Shichiro Kobayashi （ 1932-2022 ）, who sadly passed away on August 25, 2022 at the age of 89.

The Japan Gallery on the 7th floor of the Nippon Club will hold a retrospective exhibition in memory of animation art director and painter Shichiro Kobayashi （ 1932-2022 ） who sadly passed away on August 25, 2022, at the age of 89.

Mr. Kobayashi served as art director for numerous animation works for nearly 50 years since the pioneer days of TV animation, including "The Star of the Giant," "Moomin," "New Obake no Q-taro," "Donegai Toad," "The Genius Bakabon," "Ashita no Joe 2," "Lupin III: Cagliostro's Castle," and "Nodame Cantabile. He has served as art director for numerous animated films over the past 50 years.

It has been Kobayashi's lifelong dream to hold a solo exhibition in New York. We will look back on the trajectory of Mr. Kobayashi's life in the history of animation itself, and his profound influence on creators and enthusiasts in Japan and abroad, by introducing the world in which he continued to pursue images of the beauty and infinite power of nature in both figurative and abstract forms as a painter. Enjoy the strength and technique of his hand-drawn animation backgrounds and the unknown, unexpected and surprising world of "freedom" that Kobayashi pursued throughout his life in his paintings. Admission is free.
